This residency focuses on the island of Failaka, inviting participants to interact with its history, topography and mythology. I collaborated with architect Alya Tamer on a photographic study investigating the origins of color photography through the trichrome process. We explored the botanical and chemical potential of Failaka, interacting with the desolate and abandoned nature of the island to see how life continues to grow within the rubble.

We developed sustainable, plant-based film developers using vegetation sourced from the island and used them to process black and white film shot through trichrome. This process will produce a series of color-constructed images using alternative print methods like cyanotype, where the island’s flora is used again for color toning, making Failaka alive in our prints.
